Faculty - 2016 Summer School
Daan P. van Soest is professor of environmental economics at VU University Amsterdam (Department of Spatial Economics and IVM), and at Tilburg University (Department of Economics). In 1998 he received his PhD from the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, on the basis of a thesis on the economics of tropical deforestation. Since then he has worked on environmental topics as diverse as renewable natural resource use, instrument choice and environmental policy design, the economics of biodiversity conservation, and the economics of energy use. His research is both theoretical and empirical in nature, and he also uses economic experiments to gain insight into the behavioral aspects of (un)sustainable use. He publishes his work in specialized field journals in environmental economics as well as in general interest economics journals. Since 2007 he serves as associate editor of the journal Environmental and Resource Economics, and he is co-editor of Resource and Energy Economics since 2012.
