Professor Gary Sampson worked at the UN Conference on Trade and Development in Geneva. He then the joint positions of Senior Fellow in Economic Policy with the Reserve Bank of Australia and Professorial Fellow at the Centre of Policy Studies, Monash University. He also held various advisory positions with the Australian Government (including with the Industries Commission and the Economic Policy Advisory Committee in the Office of the Prime Minister).

He was then appointed Director at GATT and subsequently Director at the WTO. He has been responsible for a number of Divisions in both these institutions. He currently holds the posts of Senior Counsellor at the World Trade Organisation, and Professor of International Economic Governance at the Institute of Advanced Studies at the United Nations University in Tokyo. He is Professorial Fellow at the Melbourne Business School where he teaches on a regular basis. He also teaches at London School of Economics. He has written extensively on all areas of international economics and published widely in both academic and more popular press. His most recent books include Trade, Environment and the WTO and The Role of the WTO in Global Governance.
