Prof. Joyeeta Gupta has Bachelors' degrees in economics ( Delhi University ) and law ( Gujarat University , India ), a master's in law ( Harvard Law School , USA ) and a Ph.D. in law (Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam , the Netherlands ). She has worked for Non-Governmental Organizations in India (The Consumer Education and Research Centre, Ahmedabad), the US (Ralph Nader's Center for the Study of Responsive Law) and the Netherlands (The International Organization of Consumers' Unions). Subsequently she worked at the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment. Since 1993, she has been working at the Institute for Environmental Studies at the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences in de Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam and is presently Professor of Climate Change Law and Policy. She also holds a part time position as Professor in Policy and Law on Water Resources and the Environment at the UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in Delft.

Joyeeta Gupta has published extensively in the area of environmental governance, climate change and North-South relations. She is Editor-in-chief of the Journal – International Environmental Agreements: Politics, Law and Economics and is on the editorial board of a few other journals. She is, inter alia, a member of the scientific steering committees of the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), of the System for Analysis, Research and Training (START) of IGBP, IHDP and WCRP; Vice-Chair of the Global Change Commission of the Netherlands, and of the Netherlands Research Programme on Climate Change. She is a lead author with the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change, and is presently a lead author for the Millennium Ecosystem Assessmen
