Ujjayant Chakravorty is Professor and Canada Research Chair at the University of Alberta, with a joint appointment in the School of Business and the Department of Economics. He is also a visiting professor at the Toulouse School of Economics and has visited the University of Paris at Sorbonne and the l’institut national de la recherche agronomique (INRA) in France. During the summer of 2010, he was the Andre Hoffmann Visiting Chair at the Graduate Institute for International Studies in Geneva.

His main research areas are resource and environmental economics. He has worked on the economics of energy, including the pricing of oil, coal and other fossil fuels, the effect of environmental regulation on energy prices and the economics of clean energy alternatives. His work on the economic prospects for solar energy has been cited in The Skeptical Environmentalist by Bjorn Lomborg and in Global Environmental Negotiations: Green Politics by Anil Agarwal and Sunita Narain. Some of his recent research explores the economics of nuclear power as an alternative to the use of coal and the effect of environmental regulation on the development of clean energy resources. He has worked on allocation and pricing of water resources. His research on the response of fishing vessels to management policies in the North Pacific was cited by environmental groups in Hawaii to obtain a ban on fishing in turtle-intensive areas.

He has held tenured faculty positions at Emory University, UCF and the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has lectured and held short-term appointments at the Graduate Institute in Geneva, the Hebrew University, Ben-Gurion University, World Bank, the International Food Policy Research Institute, Kobe University, Jadavpur University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka, Georgia Southern University, FAO (Rome) and ESCAP (Bangkok). He has organized international conferences on energy and water economics in Alberta, Spain, Singapore and the Big Island of Hawaii and has taught executive education courses in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. He has served as a member of the Global Ecosystems (Globec) group of the United Nations. He has been an invited speaker at conferences organized by the College de France, the Potsdam Institute in Germany, University of British Columbia and at the Ministry of Energy in Paris.
Chakravorty has received research funding from NSF, NOAA, SSHRC, the Government of Japan and other agencies. His research has been published in academic journals including the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Energy Journal and OPEC Review. He is on the Editorial
Board for the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Resource and Energy Economics, past associate editor of the journal Water Resources Research and guest editor for journals such as Environmental and Development Economics, Agricultural Economics and Optimal Control: Applications and Methods. He is co-editor of the book India and Global Climate Change: Perspectives on Economics and Policy from a Developing Country published in 2003 by the RFF and Oxford University Press. The book is widely used as a case study on the relationship between a growing economy and the threat of climate change. His works have been reprinted in several books including Michael Hoel’s Recent Developments in Environmental Economics (2004). He is a frequent commentator on energy and environment issues on television and the print media.

Ujjayant Chakravorty has a BS in Civil Engineering from IIT Delhi (1979) and a PhD in Resource and Environmental Economics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa (1989).
