Santiago Rubio is full professor at the University of Valencia, Spain. At this university he teaches environmental and natural resource economics and microeconomics at the Faculty of Economics. He was one of the promoters of the Spanish-Portuguese Association of the Environmental and Natural Resource Economics being its Second Vice-President since 2002 to 2005. He has been also involved in the running of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists acting as a Vice-President during the last two years. He has been Visiting Scholar at the University of California at Berkeley, U.S.A. and at the University of Southampton, U.K.

His research has focused mainly on the economic theory of natural resources. In particular, he has written on different aspects of non-renewable resources economics including optimal exploitation, investment under uncertainty and strategic taxation. He has also several papers on water economics mainly on groundwater and transfers. Another field of specialization has been the growth theory focusing on the research of the compatibility of growth with the preservation of the natural resources. In the last years, his research has addressed the issue of the international cooperation to control pollution from a game theory perspective. His research has been published in different journals. Among them, it could be highlighted the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, the Journal of Public Economics, the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control,  the Oxford Economics Papers and the Energy Journal.
